Small town Christmas

December in the mountains  began with the annual Small Town Christmas weekend.  It truly is a Hallmark feeling in Banner Elk the 1st weekend of the month, starting with the Friday night lighting of the tree in town square.  The tree lighting began with hot chocolate, cookies and singing carols.  Of course we had the count down (10,9,8….) then the  beautiful white lights came on and everyone cheered, laughed and enjoyed the evening.  That marked the beginning celebration of Christmas in Banner Elk. Mickey Mouse even showed up to see the children which added to the excitement of the evening. Don’t worry, Santa was getting his rest for the next day.

The excitement of Saturday morning started with breakfast with Santa!! Cookie decorating, and making ornaments were hosted by the local restaurants. Crafts and gifts were sold at Lees McRae College.  Of course they don’t forget the adults, they have the Reindeer Run and the Polar Bear Plunge.  Adults dressed up for the occasion and fun times were had by all.  It was a great fund raising event for local needs.  That night the people lined the streets waiting for the” lighted Christmas Parade.”  It started with the Mayor and town board riding the train and ended with Santa throwing candy to the children.  But the evening didn’t end then as the train led the children to the park to see sit on Santa’s knee. Children waited in line to ride the train and see the lights that go through the park. It was a great evening in Banner Elk. Every year I feel like I am on the set of  a Christmas special…. of course HALLMARK!!

The ski slopes are now open and snow is being blown on the slopes every day.  I will have to say, we have already had four snows so I feel it will be a great season for the skiers and snowboarders.  Come and see us, sit around the fire and have  some hot chocolate and smores.  We look forward to spending time with you in 2020.  Call and I will help you with your reservations and give you information on the activities in the area.

The Balls and the staff at The Lodge at River Run wish you a Very Merry Christmas!  We hope to see you in the new year.

Bobbie
